Protecting your Child- Legal documents needed for your child
Written by Midtown Plaza Law Center on February 24, 2009If you have recently gone through a divorce (or even if you haven’t) you may want to talk to an attorney to discuss appropriate legal planning. If there is an issue with the other parent appropriately maintaining your estate for the benefit of your child should you unexpectedly predecease your child, you may well want to investigate creating protective trusts. Additionally, if both parents should pre-decease their chid, one or both should definitely consider creating a will that establishes a preference for guardian of their child. Without considering and establishing appropriate legal protections, your child’s future may be completely outside your wishes and desires. Additionally, all parents should have copies of their child’s birth certificate and social security documentation in a safe, accessible place in case other’s do need to step in to care for your child.
